DIARY

-17.11.2007-

Hard training week got the end it deserved! I won silver in foil fencing in the Finnish National Championships today. The competition took place in Töölö Kisahalli, Helsinki.

Physical preparation weeks contain 8-10 hours of ergo bike training and some odd hours of fencing training. Ergo bike training gives good stable moderate heart rate level training if one can cope with the unchanging scenery. Hopefully Helsinki will get snow sometime soon so that proper skiing training could be started.

I went to Voice Radio this morning. Juha and Vappu made hard questions about expedition foods, lonelyness and dangers on moving on ice. See more from voice website www.voice.fi

RovaniemiThe first touch to snow this season in Rovaniemi. The seasons first touch to snow is always fun. This time a day-long visit made me want to put on skiis and dissapear to wilderness for few days but unfortunately duty called.

In the morning when I arrived to Rovaniemi there was only white patches here and there but before my plane left Rovaniemi there was already almost 10 cm (4 inches) of snow on the ground.

The equipment list is getting ready. The total weight will probably set around 100 kilos and the list will evolve as the equipment testing continues.

Food and fuel are still not completely decided. Fuel economy is under a lot of testing and the safety marging need to be set properly. Traditionally my fuel consuption is quite low as I do not feel confortable using cooker to warm the tent unless absolutely needed.

-15.10.2007-

Physical training proceeds. The weekly training hours should be held high as a good basic condition level helps to recover from hard days on ice. Approx. 10 hours per week of ergo bike training creates a solid base to other training.

During the expedition the ability to recover from every hard skiing day is essential. High heart rate ja excess sweating should be avoided when continueing is the primary objective.

kuntopyörä-09.09.2007-

Last weeks training was six hours of basic condition training. Before the winter sets in most of the training will be done by bike ergometer.

The first working box is ready. The dimensions are 300 x 275 x 120 mm. The box is a compact, light weight package containing the cooker, pans and the fuel bottle in its own contained.

MRS XGK EX-11.07.2007-

The building of a new cooker box begins. The cooker box is based on MSR XGK EX. The final box is made out of aluminium to make it as light as possible.
