THE EXTREME CONTINENT

AntarcticaAntarctica is the windiest, coldest and dryest continen on earth. Winds sweep the glacier plateus with the speed of over 320 km/h.

The annual rainfall is less than in Sahara desert. The Antarctic has the world record in the lowest measured temparature. In 1983 Russian base Vostok measured the lowest meteorological temparature: -89.2 celsius.

Summer season in Antarctic area is from November to February during which the temparature rises on the coastal regions to above plus degrees. The South Pole stays firmly over 20 degrees celsius below freesing even on the summer season.

The difference between the summer and the winter season is clear to Finnish and to Scandinavians generally. During the summer mid-night sun gives warmt and light 24 hours a day and during winters sun stays below horizon.
